A piece initially born as a composition for piano solo. The melody is decidedly melodramatic (a style that takes refuge in modern soundtracks), the pressing tempo, and especially the second major theme, serve as a positive redemption of the overall atmosphere of the piece. In the finale I wanted to experiment with harmonics, the quartet takes a bit of the sound of a calliope, a steam organ in vogue in the American circuses and fairs of the early 20th century.
